Visual and Vestibular Rehabilitation on the North Shore
Vestibular rehabilitation and visual rehabilitation are key elements in restoring your well-being and quality of life after an injury or concussion. Our team does everything possible so that you can resume your daily activities with complete confidence.
What is vestibular rehabilitation?
Your vestibular system is located in the inner ear and helps you orient yourself in space during angular movements, for example when checking blind spots in a car. It is also used during linear movements such as when in an elevator.
A vestibular problem can cause dizziness, vertigo, nausea, balance problems, difficulty focusing on objects and nystagmus. The good news: simple exercises can greatly improve and reduce symptoms related due to vestibular problems.
Visual exercises to optimize your recovery
After a concussion, it is common to have difficulty getting the eyes to converge to fixate on an object, to follow a moving object with the eyes or to adjust between targets up close and targets at a distance. One may also develop problems with visuospatial awareness, which can lead to collisions with objects due to poor perception of distances.
This can affect our abilities to drive a car, buy groceries, or simply tolerate the environment in a restaurant. Visual overload can greatly deplete the energy resources of the brain as it attempts to heal. It is then important to follow a visual rehabilitation program and complete the exercises in a precise order so as not to cause compensatory imbalances.
